WSBE Purchases NewsTicker Closings to Air Statewide Closures and Delays for First Time
November 22, 2007

WSBE (Providence, RI) has purchased NewsTicker Closings and the FreedomSD, allowing them for the first time to display school and business closing information to the entire state.

Due to the large infrastructure requirements, PBS stations historically have not collected and displayed school closing information. But, as part of the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association centralized-closings initiative, that barrier has been removed, allowing all media access to the most current information.

This season marks the second year of RIBA's centralized school closing system, which is powered by Newsroom's NewsTicker Closings module. The automated system collects closures and delays on behalf of all media outlets in the state, providing a continuously updated XML export to all area television and radio stations.

WSBE will also be able to utilize NewsTicker's intuitive web-based interface to manage messaging during their fundraising activities.

"Since PBS is a non-traditional platform for school closings, this does open the potential for WSBE to experiment and, perhaps, display the information in a way that commercial stations cannot," said Rick Summers, Newsroom's Vice President for Sales and Marketing.

WSBE is owned by the state-run Rhode Island Public Telecommunications Authority.
